Benji Gregory, Star of ALF, Found Dead in Car

Benji Gregory Hertzberg, the actor known for his role as Brian Tanner on the 1990s sitcom ALF, has sadly passed away at the age of 46. Although he died on June 13, 2024, the news was made public on July 10, 2024. His sister confirmed his death, revealing that both Benji and his service dog were found deceased in a car parked in Peoria, Arizona. The family chose not to announce his passing immediately to allow time for mourning. According to her statement, Benji succumbed to heatstroke.

Rebecca, his sister, shared the news via a Facebook post, stating, “My brother Ben was discovered in his car with his beloved service dog Hans on June 13. We believe he went there on the evening of the 12th to handle some residuals but never left the car. He fell asleep and tragically died from vehicular heatstroke.”

Benji Gregory began his acting career at the age of 6 and gained fame for his role in ALF, where he played Brian Tanner, the younger brother and best friend of the alien character ALF. The sitcom followed the adventures of an alien who is adopted by a suburban family.

Born on May 26, 1978, Benji came from a family with deep ties to the entertainment industry. His father, uncle, and sisters were established actors in Hollywood, and his grandmother worked as his agent.

In addition to ALF, Benji Gregory appeared in various TV commercials and shows during the 1980s, including The Twilight Zone, The A-Team, Punky Brewster, and Amazing Stories. He also featured in the 1986 film Jumping Jack Flash, playing Harry Carlson Jr. alongside Whoopi Goldberg, and voiced Edgar The Mole in the 1993 animated film Once Upon A Forest.

In 2004, Benji transitioned from acting to serve in the U.S. Navy as an Aerographer’s Mate, stationed in Biloxi, Mississippi. His sister Rebecca also disclosed that Benji was receiving therapy for depression and bipolar disorder at the time of his death.
