A Profile Of Shehbaz Sharif, Who May Become Pak PM

If Imran Khan loses the vote of no confidence, a new government could be led by opposition leader and Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) leader Shehbaz Sharif,  brother of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif. The indication was given on Wednesday by Chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP)  Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. “Imran Khan has now lost his majority. He is no longer the Prime Minister. Tomorrow the session of Parliament. Tomorrow we vote and we will solve the problem. Then we can  start working on transparent elections and on the way to the restoration of democracy and the end of democracy. Then the economic crisis can  begin,” the PPP chairman told a press conference yesterday, adding that Sharif “will soon become” the country’s prime minister. Shehbaz Sharif tabled the no-confidence motion against Khan’s government in the National Assembly on Monday.Shehbaz Sharif is the chairman of the PMLN, replacing his brother and ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who has lived in London since he was convicted of two corruption cases in Pakistan.He is the current leader of the opposition in the National Assembly (lower house of the Pakistani parliament). Sharif holds the distinction of being the longest-serving prime minister of Pakistan’s Punjab province, having served  three times. He first became Prime Minister of Punjab province  in 1997. But, after a  coup by General Pervez Musharraf in 1999, he had to leave Pakistan and spent the next eight years in exile in Saudi Arabia. . Shehbaz Sharif and his brother returned to Pakistan in 2007. He became  Chief Minister of Punjab again after his party won the 2008 general election. Sharif’s third term as Prime Minister of Punjab  began in 2013 and he served a full term until defeated. of the  PMLN in the 2018 elections. He was named leader of the opposition after the 2018 elections. Legal troubles for Shehbaz Sharif In December 2019, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) froze 23 properties belonging to Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza, accusing them of money laundering.He was arrested by the NAB in the same case in September 2020 and jailed pending trial. In April 2021, the Lahore High Court released him on bail for money laundering.
